Bass Tab
Song: Poets
Artist: the tragically hip
Album: Phantom Power
tabbed by: Kris McNeely (snappleboy@radiolink.net)
This is my first attempt at tabbing a song. I think I've got it really
close to how it's played on the album.
Intro - repeat 8 times when bass comes in (after 8 measures)
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|
then play this 3 times
A|-----------------|-------------6-6-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-6-6-
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-----|-----------------|-----------------
and this once
A|-----------------|-------------6-6-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-----|-----------------|
Mute your strings for duration of the guitar riff, then
play this 4 times for the chorus
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-|
then play this twice
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-6-6-|
play this again 3 times
A|-----------------|-------------6-6-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-6-6-
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-----|-----------------|-----------------
and this once more
A|-----------------|-------------6-6-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-----|-----------------|
mute your strings for a measure, then
play this 4 times for the chorus
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-|
then play this twice
(even though Gord goes way down the neck in the video)
A|-----------------|-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-----6-----6---6-
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-----------------|-----------------|-6-8---6-8---6---
then play this 6 times
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-|
then play this again 4 times
A|-----------------|-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-----6-----6---6-
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-----------------|-----------------|-6-8---6-8---6---
then play this 8 times
E|-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-|-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-|
and end with a resonating
E|-8---------------|
I think that's about as close as you're gonna get. There may or may not
be little nuances that Gord does differently, so if you can pick them
out, you can play them like that yourself. I have a strong feeling that
he isn't playing the song the same in the video as he does on the disc.
Next up is probably Bobcaygeon.
*Here's a tip to the guitar and bass players out there - Emperor Penguin
is "I do" by Lisa Loeb, without the capo*
