Song: 1979
Group: Smashing Pumpkins
CD: Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness

Hey this is the first tab I've ever made, so if you have any corrections or suggestions, just email me at oracle84@netzero.net . I've seen a lot of versions of this song, and none of them sound right, so I'm gonna put it the way my band plays it.
Tuning is a half step low like every Pumpkins song. If you ever see otherwise, the tab is wrong.
Chords:
Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb
A: 0 2 2 2 0 0
E: 0 0 1 2 2 0
R1: \ = slide down
Eb: |--------------------------------------------------------------------|
Bb: |--------------------------------------------------------------------|
Gb: |---8--8--8--8--8--8--8--9-\-4-----------------------------------|
Db: |---x--x--x--x--x--x--x--x-\-x----6-h-7-p-6----------6-h-9---|
Ab: |---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--7-\-2-----------------7-h-9-----------|
Eb: |---------------------------------------------------------------------|
I like to slide the chord down, it sounds more like the effect Billy used in the studio.
R2: / = slide up
Eb: |------------------------------------------------------------|
Bb: |------------------------------------------------------------|
Gb: |------------------------------------------------------------|
Db: |---4--4--4--4--4--4--4-/-9--9--9--9--9--9--9--9--9---|
Ab: |---4--4--4--4--4--4--4-/-9--9--9--9--9--9--9--9--9---|
Eb: |---2--2--2--2--2--2--2-/-7--7--7--7--7--7--7--7--7---|
This can and is also played on the Ab String from the ninth fret power chord down to the second fret power chord. If you listen carefully, you can hear the difference, even though both ways are the same chords, just in different octaves.
R3 (Chorus):
G2: E A
Eb: |-----0-----------------------------------------|
Bb: |-----0-----------------------------------------|
Gb: |-----9-----------------------------------------|
Db: |-----9-----6-h-7-p-6--------------6 h 9-----|
Ab: |-----7-------------------7-h-9----------------|
Eb: -----0------------------------------------------|
That's just a weird E chord that makes it easier to switch to the other part. You can figure out how many times to play it. The second guitar plays a standard E with the first, and then switches to A while the first plays the rift. Billy and Flood use some weird synthesizer effect here that I couldnt tab, but the A on guitar 2 will take care of it.
R4: (Bridge) (Both Guitars)
Eb: |-----------------------------|
Bb: |------------------------------|
Gb: |------------------------------|
Db: |---9---/----11---\----7------|
Ab: |---9---/----11---\----7------|
Eb: |---7---/----9----\----5------|
They play this a couple of times. You can figure out how many times each one is played, its not hard. Thats basically it as far as rifts go.
In the verses, the lyrics come on the second part of R1. The bridge actually starts on the second syllable of assured.
1979:
(R1)(R1)Shake down, ninteen seven nine,
(R1)Cool kids never had the time,
(R1)On a live wire, right up off the (R2)street,
You and I, Should meet.
(R1)Junebug skippin' like a stone,
(R1)With the headlights pointed at the dawn,
(R1)We were sure we'd never see an (R2)end, to it all.
(R3)And I dont even care,
To shake these zipper blues,
(R3)And we don't know, Just where our bones will,
(R3)Rest to dust, I guess,
Forgotten and (R2)absorbed, into earth below.
(R1)(R1)Double cross the vacant and the bored,
(R1)They're not sure just what we have in store,
(R1)Morphine city slippin (R2)dues, down to see
(R3)That we dont even care,
As restless as we are,
(R3)We feel the pull, In the land of a thousand
(R3)Guilts and poured cement, lamented and (R4)assured
To the lights, and towns below,
(R4)Faster than the speed of sound,
(R4)Faster than we thought we'd go,
(R2)Beneeth the sound of hope,
(R1)Justine never knew the rules,
(R1)Hung down with the freaks and ghouls,
(R1)No apoligies ever need be made,
(R1)I knew you better than you (R2)fake it,
To see
(R3)That we dont even care,
To shake these zipper blues,
(R3)And we dont know, just where our bones will
(R3)Rest to dust, I guess,
Forgotten and (R2)absorbed, into earth below.
(R1)The street heats the urgency of sound,
(R1)As you see there's no one around.
The last line slows down, and both guitars on an E chord..
